The
One Nugget Report from The Project Management Advisor™
Issue 2010-17 - Managing Cross-Organizational Teams
Are you currently in a situation where you have to lead a group of
people to some common objective where the team members don't report
to you? I am a firm believer that leading cross
organizational, or virtual, teams is one of the most difficult
aspects of leading. When leading those who are not
organizationally mandated to follow the leader through a direct
reporting relationship, the leader is forced to not rely upon a
"command and control" style of leading but much more on a guiding,
inspiring, and accountability style of leadership. One of my
favorite books, Flight
of the Buffalo - Soaring to Excellence, Learning to Let Employees
Lead, contrasts command and control (buffaloes) and guide and
inspire (geese) leaders. For years I was a command and control
leader and found that it just didn't work particularly when I had to
manage cross-organizational teams. Painful lesson for me but
one that I am thankful I finally learned.
