Setting Yourself Apart From Your Colleagues -

Setting yourself apart isn’t about sucking up or playing politics.  It’s about knowing what’s important and delivering against those things which are important.   It’s not about playing favorites or engaging in political nonsense to put yourself at the top of the heap...

The Good and The Bad of Virtual Meetings -

Smarts Minus Direction Equals Absent-Minded Professor -

I once worked for a manager who was probably one of the smartest people I have ever met.  He had a Ph.D. from a very prestigious university and could think in dimensions I could only hope to be able to understand before I died.  I was in awe of his intellectual horsepower and pure knowledge.  What I wasn’t in awe of was his lack of desire to establish and communicate a cohesive direction for the team.  In his own mind he truly believed that both he and everyone else understood the direction he wanted to take the organization.  The truth was that we as a team had absolutely no clue where he wanted to take the organization; worse still, he would get very irritated when we tried to pin him down on direction.  So, while I was highly impressed in his intellectual horsepower, I had great difficulty with not having a clear understanding of the direction he wanted to go.

Ebay and the Project Manager -

From a very practical perspective, my Ebay experience was highly irrational.  I was willing to sacrifice sleep and get wrapped around the axle about something which costs no more than breakfast for two.  Yet I allowed my emotions to get wrapped up in getting that silly flash memory stick despite the logic of it not being that expensive and that sleep should have been more valuable to me than saving a couple of dollars.   As project managers, we can experience the same phenomenon when driving projects...
